Lyssa Kay Adams

Quick Synopsis

A baseball player discovers his wife has been faking her orgasms, and he turns to a secret romance book club for help saving his marriage.

Publisher’s Synopsis

The first rule of book club: You don’t talk about book club.

Nashville Legends second baseman Gavin Scott’s marriage is in major league trouble. He’s recently discovered a humiliating secret: his wife Thea has always faked the Big O. When he loses his cool at the revelation, it’s the final straw on their already strained relationship. Thea asks for a divorce, and Gavin realizes he’s let his pride and fear get the better of him.

Welcome to the Bromance Book Club.

Distraught and desperate, Gavin finds help from an unlikely source: a secret romance book club made up of Nashville’s top alpha men. With the help of their current read, a steamy Regency titled Courting the Countess, the guys coach Gavin on saving his marriage. But it’ll take a lot more than flowery words and grand gestures for this hapless Romeo to find his inner hero and win back the trust of his wife.

Book Review

When I joined bookstagram back in 2020, this series was all the rage. Being me, I bought more than just one book in the series where they have been sitting until a few months ago.

The Bromance Book Club centers on MLB player Gavin who discovers his wife, Thea, has been faking her satisfaction in the bedroom. As a result, Gavin moves out leaving Thea to realize that she is unsatisfied in their marriage and wants a divorce just as Gavin discovers that he is an idiot and misses her. Gavin’s friends/teammates let him in on their secret – an all-male book club that reads romance novels to better understand women, and hopefully, save Gavin’s marriage.

Diving into The Bromance Book Club, I did not pay too much attention to the synopsis. However, it turns out that this novel is a mash up of my least favorite romance tropes: a second chance romance and miscommunication. In addition, we have an immature man-child protagonist who illustrates weaponized incompetence, which I find nearly impossible to redeem. So I am not surprised that I did not absolutely love this book.

I enjoyed the premise of this novel and men finally wising up and caring about what women actually want. However, my personality stood in the way of me becoming enthralled in its pages. I will admit my flaws and say that I am not the forgiving type. As a result, I had difficulty getting on board with Thea forgiving Gavin and eventually taking him back. In my opinion, he need to do a hell of a lot more for her to even consider the idea.

In my reviews, I always attempt to be as objective as possible. However, I think this is a book that I cannot step back from my biases about. That being said, I liked the overall story, but I did not buy into the romance since I thought Gavin was a rather despicable specimen. I think Lyssa Kay Adams’s writing shows promise and plan to continue the series.

Overall, The Bromance Book Club has a great premise but characters some may not be able to find redeeming. I am going to pick up the next book in the series with an open mind and hope that Adam’s other protagonists are more likable for this opinionated lady.
