January 2025 Book of the Month Predictions

Book of the Month is a subscription box in which members choose up to 3 hardcover books to receive each month. Once you become a BOTM BFF, you can receive up to 5 books per month.
You can sign up here to get your first book for $5.

Every month, I make pretty accurate (80-100%) predictions about which books will be featured by Book of the Month (BOTM). I take a lot of time to research upcoming releases, analyze past selections, and choose books that are solid bets.

IMHO it was a rough last quarter months for BOTM. They seemingly abandoned their core subscribers to cater to the TikTok/Zoomer demographic. As a result, a lot of individuals who have been long-time subscribers (myself included) have cancelled one or more accounts. Last month’s releases seemed like a better combination of books to attract both their faithful subscribers and new ones. At least, I think so as someone who has no idea what is going on over on TikTok. I am hoping that they will continue with a better balance in the new year. This is especially true because I am not a young adult or a fantasy reader, which means these genres are areas of weakness when it comes to my predictions.

After a slow few publishing months, January is always an exciting new start with a lot of big titles. There are a ton of fresh debuts and smattering of new releases from repeat authors. I think we will definitely be seeing at least 3 contemporary or literary fiction novels this month.

I think the books will most likely drop on Tuesday, December 31st or Wednesday, January 1st. Of course, keep in mind that January 1st is a federal holiday.

Contemporary & Literary Fiction

I wavered whether to include a few books but ultimately ruled them out, including Good Girl by Aria Aber, Call Her Freedom by Tara Dorabji, Playworld by Adam Ross, and Mothers and Sons by Adam Haslett. There are a few January 28th releases that I think could be either January or February selections: Too Soon by Betty Shamieh and Penitence by Kristin Koval. Since it is likely that We Could Be Rats will be an early release this month, I have not included the other January 28 releases below.
