Out on a Limb

Hannah Bonam-Young

Quick Synopsis

A hot one-night stand—and an unexpected pregnancy—lead a young woman to someone she can depend on, from the viral TikTok author of Next of Kin and Next to You.

Publisher’s Synopsis

Winnifred “Win” McNulty has always been wildly independent and not one to be coddled for her limb difference. Win has spent most of her life trying to prove that she can do it all on her own. With some minor adjustments, she’s done just fine.

Hooking up at a costume party with the incredibly charming Bo changes everything. Win finds herself pregnant—and decides to keep the baby. While Bo is surprisingly elated to step up to the plate, Win is unsure of whether she can handle this new challenge.

Together, Win and Bo decide to get to know one another as friends and nothing more while they embark on this parenting journey together. But, as they both should know by now, life rarely goes according to plan.

Book Review

Out on a Limb is the second novel I have read by Hannah Bonam-Young, and it will definitely not be my last.

Out on a Limb is a slow burning romance that begins wit a hook-up between two strangers at a Halloween party that results in an unexpected pregnancy. When Win decides to keep the baby, Bo steps up and takes an active role in supporting Win’s pregnancy. The two build a friendship, become roommates, and eventually fall or one another.

Out on a Limb is a wholesome, sweet romance novel that will leave you with that warm fuzzy feeling. I generally avoid the unplanned pregnancy trope at all costs. Why would I want to read something that makes me panic and uncomfortable? Well, it seems that the trope can be done expertly and in a refreshing manner. I am starting to think that Bonam-Young can navigate the toughest of situations with grace, empathy, and sensitivity.

Win and Bo are both likable, sunshine characters. I want to show this novel to all the other romance novels so they can learn healthy communication. These two will have you swooning, crying, and laughing.

If you need drama and a third act break-up in your romance novels, you may not be satisfied with this novel. Personally, I liked reading a romance that does not have trumped up conflict or a break-up just to check a box. Instead, Out on a Limb is more about the emotional and personal growth of the characters and how they embrace each other. While healing from past heartaches, Win and Bo learn how to let go of the past, be vulnerable, and chart a future filled with happiness.

If there is anything to be improved in this book, I would say that a setting is missing. There is no real sense of place, and everything occurs in an apartment or a house. Looking back, it seems a bit insular and could have benefited from changes in scenery.

Overall, Out on a Limb is a warm, reassuring hug of a novel that will give you hope. Bonam-Young expertly built a charming story between two protagonists who will stick with you. I highly recommend this novel.
